Welcome to my studio,
I'm teaching artist with over 20 years of combined experience in classroom, museum, and outdoor education with children, families, and adults. I'm passionate about making art fun and accessible, and I believe everyone is creative.
My specialty is connecting art to science and nature
I draw from my education, teaching experience, art practice (I'm currently working on collages, patterns, and bookmaking!) and expertise gained over decades of developing and teaching classes, workshops, and drop by programs.
I earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Textiles and Fiber, an AMI Elementary Diploma, and an M.Ed. from Loyola of Baltimore.
My classes blend a process focus with skill building, and plenty of opportunity to work on individual style. Classes use carefully selected materials, are hands-on, open-ended, use real stuff...specimens, artifacts, live plants, and even live animals...and are fun!

When I'm not teaching you'll find me hiking outdoors, experimenting with a new class idea, reading, or working on a creative project. I love spending time in the desert or at the ocean and travel as often as possible. I feel so endlessly fortunate that I'm able to weave together my passions and offer classes and workshops that connect art, science and nature.
I teach enrichment classes and workshops at schools, libraries, museums, and special events. Classes include observational drawing and programs that explore collage, textiles, bookmaking, painting, sculpture, including kinetic sculpture, and printmaking. I can be reached at BetsyMittenStudio@gmail.com or through the contact page on this website.
